Employing for Empowerment

EXPLORING THE UNLIMITED POTENTIALĀ OF EVERY HUMAN BEING

In the Beginning…

One day I got a call from a small but reputable IT firm in the city asking if our organization could introduce people who had gone through our employment preparedness training program to their company. I was thrilled to have a conversation about this because while we had several great employment partners in the service and manufacturing industries, I was looking for a path into technology for several of our young program participants who had interest and skills in the space.

The managing director met me at reception for our 10 a.m. meeting and walked me through an open work space to his office. To my surprise the work space was cluttered and frankly a little depressing with all the furniture and equipment in white and dingy blues and greys and the sectional carpet snagged and unraveling in places, and every employee I saw was either napping (literally with their heads on their desks) or seemed to be mindlessly scrolling through social media.

I was knocked slightly off my game but still shared my enthusiasm about potential cooperation with my host. I said something along the lines that factory work and food service wasn’t for everyone but we had several program participants that were budding hackers and I thought would do quite well in an IT company. His reply intended to curb my enthusiasm was, “Well, we’re not exactly making smoothies here.”

The conversation was over at that point. We keep talking, but I’m not sure about what.

I wanted to say, “What are you doing here? Napping? Discovering photos of kittens?”

If you don’t believe, and express with your every word an action, that the young man making your smoothie, or the young woman on your factory floor, the intern reinstalling operating systems does not presently have inherent value equivalent to every other human in the world, and unlimited potential for the future, we have no business talking about an employment assistance program.
